Spelling Practice

As we continue to work on strengthening spelling skills in our classroom, I want to emphasize the importance of nightly spelling practice at home.

Regular practice helps students:

  • Build confidence with spelling patterns

  • Improve reading and writing skills

  • Retain words more effectively for long-term learning

Students are expected to practice their spelling words for a short amount of time each evening. This does not need to be lengthy—3-5 minutes of focused practice can make a big difference. Activities may include writing the words, spelling them aloud, using them in sentences, or practicing with games or flashcards.

Consistent practice at home, combined with instruction at school, gives students the best opportunity for success. Thank you for your continued support and partnership in helping your child develop strong literacy skills.

The students of 2D led the school mass today. They did an amazing job and received several compliments on their leadership. We received an anonymous compliment, which really made our day.

September Award Winner! Holy Door

2D won the Holy Door award at the praise assembly today. Mrs. Stucky awarded them this award because the Jubilee/Holy Door symbolizes crossing the threshold towards Christ. As a class, they are someone who constantly seeks Christ and His mercy. Congratulations, 2D, you are on a roll! Two awards in a row!

Teamwork Thursday

Thursday 2D accepted the challenge of stacking cups in creative ways- but with a twist! Each challenge had special rules: only one finger, one hand, and popsicle sticks. Through laughter, problem-solving, and a few toppled towers, the class learned the importance of patience, communication, and teamwork. They discovered that working together makes even the trickiest challenges possible and way more fun!

Our First Spelling Test

We have successfully completed our first spelling test of second grade! When you are reviewing the test, you will see that it is a story that is missing ten words. I read the story as they follow along. I then go back over the story, this time I call the number and say the word, and they fill in the blank. Once we have filled in all of the blanks, I read the story one more time, and they are to follow along, paying close attention to the end of the sentence and the beginning of the next sentence. (The difference between a period and a comma was noted during the reading.) The additional five words came from the 35 words that were introduced during first grade. These are also words that they are accountable for in second grade. If your child missed any words, I circled them on the spelling page located in the BEE Folder (bright blue). It would be very beneficial if these words were practiced each week until they are mastered.  We will have another five words tomorrow, and we will test on Friday. It is important to remember that we are practicing to be lifelong spellers, not Friday test spellers. The words we tested today will pop up again in other spelling tests.

Humanity Award

2D won the Humanity Award during the September Praise Assembly! Humanity: The figures on the icon represent humanity from the four corners of the world. They are embracing each other to illustrate coming together/ solidarity.  Great job 2D for showing Humanity during Art class!!

Spelling Words

Today we took our first spelling pretest. You will find the spelling page behind the homework page. The homework for tonight is to write a sentence for each of the spelling words. Please make sure that you proofread the sentences. Check for capitalization, punctuation, and spelling. This page will stay in the folder so that you and your child can practice the spelling words each night. Best ways to practice...say them, write them, draw them. How you practice this week is up to you!

WELCOME BACK

As we get back into the routine of school, we also need to get back into the routine of checking homework, signing homework sheets, packing snacks, and filling water bottles.

Tonight, your student will practice reading the HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS and the VOCABULARY WORDS. These words can be found on the Reading at a Glance page in the BEE Folder. Have them read the words aloud.

Have a great night!

Oh my GOODNESS, it's Fr. Joe!!! I had the opportunity to meet him a couple of weeks ago. Those that know me, know I just think he is the greatest! He has written several children's books and has videos that I use in class for reconciliation, communion & the mass. It was such a treat! He even wrote a special note to the kids.

A Special Visitor

2012-13 2D with Harold
Yesterday we had a special visitor all the way from Idaho! Last year we had a special request from my dad to pray for a friend of his who had recently been diagnosed with throat cancer. So my little prayer warriors from last year made cards letting him know that we were praying for him. This week he made the trip from Idaho to Missouri to thank them personally for their prayers. We were so touched by the gesture and once again in awe of His answer to another one of our prayers!

T.G.F.M.K Day

This week we are celebrating Catholic Schools Week. While it is the 40th year we have celebrated Catholic schools, they have been around much longer than that. The picture below is of St Joseph School in Edina, MO. I didn’t attend St. Joseph however; my dad and his siblings tested the nerves and patience of many of the Sisters that ran the school. The school sat empty for several years and time and neglect took its toll on the building. Eventually, the parish had it torn down. It was a sad day to return to Edina and see an empty lot, but with everything that happens in life, there is a lesson to learned …it takes true dedication to support a Catholic education for our children. That dedication comes from parents, grandparents, loved ones and the members of our parish as well.
My grandparents were truly dedicated to St Joseph Church and supported the school in many ways. T.G.F.M.K is an acronym for Thank God for Mrs. Killday. Mrs. Killday (AKA my Grandma) stayed home raising seven children. Their house was less than a block from the school and when a student at school got sick, or was injured they were sent to grandma’s house for the necessary TLC. One of my dad’s classmates went on to become an educator for the Blue Springs school district and part of her job was to conduct seminars for area educators and support staff. In one of her seminars she created this acronym T.G.F.M.K and talked of my Grandma's care for her when she was not feeling well, along with the support and dedication to the children of St. Joseph School, encouraging the participants to be like Mrs. Killday.
I didn’t get near enough time with my Grandma before Alzheimer's but she did teach me a valuable lesson…pray all day, eventually you’ll find what you are looking for and tomorrow is always new day!
I do believe that T.G.F.M.K can have more than one meaning. It also can also mean Thank God for Mr. Killday (AKA dad). While I didn’t have an opportunity to have a Catholic education until I moved to Jefferson City and was able to attend Helias. He has been extremely supportive of my choice to teach in the Catholic school setting. Friday we will celebrate T.G.F.M.K Day with PIZZA for lunch thanks to Mr. Killday.

 Happy Catholic Schools Week!!
