Summer Slide

Dear 2D Families,

I encourage your child to read every day. Studies have shown that children who do not read over the summer lose up to two months of reading. Your child has worked hard this year to develop their reading skills; don’t let them lose that momentum. Be sure to visit the library. Check out fun books, books on their favorite topic, books that make them laugh(they love a good joke book!), or books they wanted to read but didn’t have time in school. If you plan a trip, find books about the location and read them together.  For example, Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn, then take a day trip to Hannibal.

Practicing addition facts over the summer will help them with their multiplication facts in third grade. Flashcards and workbooks can help with memorizing the math facts.

I highly recommend the Summer Bridge Activities 2-3 workbook.  It has quick lessons for each day. I used it with my children, and it was fairly easy to work through.

The Jefferson City Public Schools will be offering summer school as well. This information has been in the newsletter. If you would like more information regarding summer school, please let me know, and I can talk to you about the program.

Those summer days will pass quickly, and before you know it, you will be buying school supplies. Please avoid the summer slide and do a little something every day!

Have a relaxing summer!
